Filter

Due to constant viewing of the computer monitor, several eye troubles may begin. To avoid these, reduction of the brightness is one way while the other is to use filters. Filters, as the name indicates, filters the light coming out of the monitor acting just like sunglasses. There are anti-glare filters available which are optically coated glass filters that reduce glare, radiation, improve viewing ability, and help relieve computer-related eyestrain. They are affixed on top of the monitor screen. However, in laptops, fixing the glass filter is a problem. Hence when working with laptop notebooks, reducing the brightness is a more practical option. To overcome this problem, one of the latest notebook accessories to hit the notebook market is the 3M-multi-louvre privacy filter.

What is a privacy filter?

For increased privacy while working, and to avoid others peeking over your shoulder, laptop privacy filters are available. A privacy filter is a notebook computer accessory that is attached on the monitor of the notebook computer. It makes viewing possible only if someone is viewing the monitor directly from the front. The screen becomes progressively darker as one moves sideways. The privacy filter is a dark sheet of plastic with one side glossy and with the other side having a matte finish. The glossy side is reflective while the matte finish side has an anti-reflective look. You can choose any finish that you are comfortable with. The filter cuts off some of the light passing through it and so the screen looks darker than usual. With a reasonably bright screen, the filter-fitted display is readable. Even after considerable reduction of the brightness, the readability is satisfactory. The filter is attached to the laptop screen with transparent plastic self-adhesives. The privacy is maintained on the horizontal level. Shuffle sideways and the screen starts to darken until it becomes completely black before your viewing angle is 45 degrees.

Does the privacy filter work?

The filter makes a difference on the horizontal axis and protects your data from side-glances. However, if someone is standing behind you, then it is a bit hard to read but is still readable. These privacy filters do not cover vertical viewing angles. 3Ms mirco-louvre technology works on the premise that if anyone is standing in front of the screen, then they are probably allowed to do so and therefore are allowed to view what is displayed on the screen. Persons sitting on the sides, whether in a plane or a train, are more prone to glance on the laptop screen, and it is for these persons, 3M has designed this privacy filter. Besides privacy, an added benefit is that these 3M filters are easier to clean than the LCD/TFT screens. They can stand vigorous dusting and cleaning.
