In 1984, Michael Dell, founded a company known as PC's Limited
with just $1000, while still a student at the University of
Texas at Austin. In 1985, its first own designed computer,
the "Turbo PC" hit the market, which contained an
Intel 8088-compatible processor with a speed of 8 MHz. It
advertised in national computer magazines and was a huge success.
Michael Dell dropped out of school and attended full-time
to his business. In its first year of operation, the company
grossed more than $6 million. By 1988, the market capitalization
was $80 million and it changed its name to "Dell Computer
Corporation" with headquarters at Round Rock, Texas.
By 1991, it had opened up operations in twelve countries.
Today the company deals in products like desktops, servers,
laptops, peripherals, and printers. The company employs approximately
65,200 persons and as on the year 2006, the revenue was $55.906
billion USD with a net income of $3.572 billion USD.
Pros And Cons
The Dell Inspiron 700m laptop notebook is for students and
business professionals. The design is lightweight and thin.
It offers value for money, has a small form factor, and has
a sharp widescreen. The keyboard keys are very small due to
the small form factor. People with large hands may have problems
getting used to the small keyboard, especially typing for
long hours. The battery is 8 cell and it extends an inch outside
the body of the notebook, but it lasts for solid 5 hours.
The hard drive has 4200 rpm and 5400 rpm variety. It has possible
ground loop problem with the microphone input. The mic-in
jack buzzes and hums. This notebook computer is in the sub-notebook/ultraportable
category and is not very powerful as a desktop replacement
is. It performs very good for wordprocessing, DVD movies and
music, web surfing, but gives a below average performance
for playing games. The chipset is Intel 855GME and has SD
card reader, S-Video out, and FireWire. There is no infra-red
or bluetooth. The widescreen has a resolution of 1280, which
is very high for a screen of this size. The speed is good,
and with an upgraded RAM to 1 GB, it works very nicely. The
switching from an external monitor to an internal LCD monitor
has some problems as the windows operating system reports
a fatal error and shuts down. Right-handed users may find
uncomfortable mouse movement as the power adapter, modem and
network jacks are situated on the right side of the body.
Overall, a nice buy comparing the price and features of this
Dell product. However, the technical support need much to
be desired, as most of them do not speak English. The replacement
parts are not cheap, like if a power cable breaks, then it
is pretty expensive to replace it. The converter of the power
cable is in the middle, which weighs down the cable in the
middle. The Dell Insprion B130 features are notable but are
expensive. It needs to be more affordable for lower income
groups. The battery backup lasts for about five hours. The
Dell Inspiron E1505 has a compact size and a fast Duo Core
processor. The screen glare is a bit too much even with brightness
at minimum. The laptop is fast enough with 1 GB notebook memory,
and a 60 GB hard disk with 7200 rpm. The graphics is good
and can be upgraded to a radeon graphics card for improved
graphics. You can play DVDs without booting windows. All games
including the heavy graphics 3D games can be played with ease.
The sound quality is average. The case is bland looking but
is quite sturdy. Has no bluetooth and works great with network
connections. The Dell Inspiron 6400 has a 15.4 inch screen
and the latest Intel processors. This is a powerful laptop
with Core Duo or Core 2 Duo processors meant for mainstream
multimedia and productivity tasks.
