Eleven engineers headed by Liu Chuanzhi, founded the Legend Group Ltd, and New Technology Developer Incorporated in Beijing, China, in 1984. They dealt as agents for imported computer products. In 1990, the first Legend PC was launched in the market. Lenovo got listed in Hong Kong, in 1988. The term "Lenovo" is a portmanteau word formed of "Le" from Legend, and "novo", which is pseudo-Latin for "new". It is the largest personal computer manufacturer in China and was recently bought over by IBM on May 1, 2005.As of 2004, it was the third largest computer manufacturer in the world after it became a subsidiary company of IBM. The Lenovo Group Limited is headquartered in Purchase, New York, and manufactures computers including the IBM-branded ThinkVision, ThinkPad, ThinkCentre, ThinkVantage, Aptiva and NetVista. Lenovo is owned by public shareholders (35.2%), Legend Holdings Limited (45.9%), and IBM (18.9%) as of 2005. Lenovo sells desktop computers, laptops, servers, handheld computers, imaging equipment, and mobile phone handsets. It also provides support services and information technology integration to companies. It also offers Internet access through its FM365.com portal. It employs approximately 19,000 people and as of fiscal year 2005 had a revenue of $13 billion USD.


Pros And Cons

The Lenovo ThinkPad T30 PC Notebook has a build meant for business. It has a tough case and a nice feature set of "ThinkLight" and "TrackPoint". The laptop notebook is a bit heavy, and the battery does not last very long. There is no FireWire port and the notebook is a bit on the expensive side. It is portable, well designed, reliable, gives good support, and is fast. This notebook computer is great for network administrators who need a durable and fast laptop. The screen is small and hotkeys on the laptop are less than usual. The sound quality is not up to the desired level. Overall, a strong workhorse, works extremely well PowerPoint and is ideal for basic business requirements. The Lenovo 3000 V100 is a mini multitasking laptop that is easy on the budget. This thin-and-light notebook weighs 4.3 pound and the dual-core system offers fast performance at a reasonable price. There is an integrated webcam, fingerprint reader, and the Lenovo Care offers quick links from wireless network settings to data recovery. The right-hand side has a DVD burner, a 5-in-1 memory card reader, WiFi on/off switch, and one USB 2.0 port on the right-hand side. The left-hand side has an ExpressCard slot, the latest card technology from PCMCIA. Very few peripherals use ExpressCard slot and hence a PC Card slot would have been more appropriate. The keyboard is full-sized, the touchpad is wide and has wider buttons. The display is 12.1-inch glossy and has vivid color and contrast. The lid has two metal hinges that ensure long life. The lid has no latch and hence does not feel secure when closed. The 6-cell battery protrudes from the back of the laptop but lasts 4 hours, an average performance for a thin-and-light notebook. Lenovo Access Connection software shows an intuitive map of nearby access points along with their relative signal strengths. There is Bluetooth connectivity also. Overall, this laptop has a sharp 1.3 megapixel webcam, a very good keyboard, and delivers fast performance. An ideal laptop notebook computer for business travelers.
